Haddonfield pulls off upset of Cinnaminson in South Jersey Group 2

8.0 years ago @ 3:09PM | Chris Melchiorre, For The Inquirer

Taylor Sehdev's first shot, on Haddonfield's first possession of the game, was a smooth corner three that looked almost effortless. It was a rare tranquil moment in a game defined by wild, frenzied, and, at times, head-scratching moments.

But for Sehdev, it might have been the most important sequence of the afternoon as her fifth-seeded Bulldawgs upset top-seeded Cinnaminson, 55-43, in the South Jersey Group 2 semifinals.

"Once I make my first shot, I always feel so much more calm," Sehdev said. "After that, you take a deep breath and play.

"You have to come out strong in these games."

The mind-set proved critical for the senior guard. Sehdev netted 13 of her 17 points in the first half, helping Haddonfield build a double-digit lead before it held on for the upset.

Haddonfield moves on to a championship matchup at rival Sterling, the No. 2 seed, on Tuesday night.

"I've never had this good of a feeling before," said junior forward C.C. Mooney, who led the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds. "To do this as a team is such an awesome feeling."

The game was played in a tightly packed Cinnaminson gym with screaming and frequently agitated fans.

There were disagreements over the merit of most of the fouls called, but, right or wrong, the Bulldawgs were awarded 43 foul shots in the game, making 24 of them.

Two players fouled out for the Pirates, and most of the team was in foul trouble, including star senior guard Marisa DiLeo (17 points), who was carrying four fouls in the final quarter.

The fouls disrupted the flow of the game. But it didn't stop Cinnaminson (22-7) from mounting a furious comeback, playing aggressive full-court defense, increasing the physicality of the game late, and forcing Haddonfield (25-4) to do whatever it could to stay calm and keep its composure down the stretch.
