Coaches

Phoebe Figland.

Assistant Coach

Biography:

Coach Phoebe Figland served as a volunteer assistant with the HMHS boys’ and girls’ tennis teams in 2019 and as assistant coach since 2020 under Coach Jeff Holman.  She is working towards her accreditation as an interscholastic coach through NFHS (the National Federation of State High School Associations).

Coach Figland is a 1981 graduate of HMHS and played varsity tennis for Coach Holman for three years.  During her high school career, she made numerous all-star teams, earning All-Colonial Conference, All-South Jersey, and All-New Jersey recognition.   As a senior, she was the #2 singles player on the first girls’ tennis team in state history to compete in and win the New Jersey All-Groups Tournament of Champions.  Along with her achievements in high school tennis, Coach Figland began competing in USTA Middle States Tennis Association junior and district tournaments at 16, and at 17 she earned the “Most Improved” award in the 18-and-under age group.  Subsequently, the University of Richmond recruited Coach Figland for women’s tennis.  During her freshman year, the women’s tennis team won the 1982 AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) national championship.  In the following year, Richmond left AIAW competition for NCAA Division I competition after the NCAA's decision to offer championships for women in its top competitive division.  Unfortunately, a knee injury prevented Coach Figland from consistently competing over the next two years.  Following ACL surgery during her junior year, she was able to compete for a full season as a senior.

While attending college, Coach Figland worked as a tennis instructor for a juniors’ camp held at Green Valley Racquet Club.  After graduating from Richmond with an accounting degree in 1985, she worked for eight months in retail.  In January 1986, she left retail to become a tennis instructor at the Cherry Hill Racquet Club, providing private and group lessons to adults and children.  Then in September 1986, Delaware Group, a mutual fund company, hired Coach Figland as a staff accountant in the fund accounting department.  Within two years, she was promoted to supervisor and later became a manager and officer of the company.  She remained with the fund accounting department for over 32 years.  Currently, Coach Figland is serving in her second year as treasurer of the Haddon Field Club.

Following her intercollegiate tennis career, Coach Figland continued to compete in USTA Middle States Section adult singles and doubles tournaments, and in 1986 she achieved her best singles ranking of second in the section.  In 1987 she won the Ronald McDonald House Women’s Open tournament held at the Cherry Hill Racquet Club.  Coach Figland then transitioned to USTA league team competition primarily in the Philadelphia and New Jersey Districts, playing Women’s 5.0 and 4.5 singles and doubles, 10.0 and 9.0 mixed doubles, and currently Women’s 55-and-over 4.5+ doubles.  Many of the teams Coach Figland has played for over the years have advanced to the Middle States Sectional Championships, and two teams advanced to the USTA National Championships.  Additionally, Coach Figland competes in several local tennis leagues in the tri-state area.

Both of Coach Figland’s daughters, Rachel Rozenfeld and Gillian Rozenfeld, attended HMHS and played varsity tennis.  Like their mother, Rachel and Gillian contributed substantially to numerous team championships and made various all-star teams.  Gillian, a member of the HMHS class of 2020, is playing tennis at Gettysburg College.
