HADDONFIELD BULLDOGS

Last season: 16-5-2

Key players lost: Jon Skiba

Top returning playersJack DuganSam DeCencioMax GreenFinn Miller

2017 Outlook: After coming up one-goal short in last year’s South Jersey, Group 2 final against Delran, Haddonfield has all the motivation it needs to make sure this season will be different.

The only loss the team has to deal with is the graduation of Jon Skiba, the squad’s lone senior.

When you get beyond that, just about everybody else is returning. That starts up front with standout player Jack Dugan. The senior captain has recorded 48 goals to this point in his career and is 16 shy of tying the school scoring record.

Fellow senior Sam DeCencio will again be right beside Dugan forming one of the best one-two punches in school history. DeCencio was terrific in setting up goals last fall, racking up a team-high 19 assists.

Steve DiTomaso was another player who managed to net double-digit goals, ending the season with 13. This offensive unit looks more than capable of producing at the pace it did last year of 3.39 goals per game and could even exceed that, especially if sophomore Tommy Mollis can build off an impressive seven-goal freshman season.

The team will also get a boost at the full-time return of junior Luke Baxter, who missed most of the 2016 season with a back injury but played a large role in the team’s run to a sectional final.

Two key pieces are also back on the defensive side in Gabe DaSilva and Will Sabia. DaSilva had a great sophomore year on both sides of the ball while Sabia had his best year to date as a junior and will be counted on once again to help lead a stingy defense.

The backbone of that defense is goalkeeper Finn Miller, who had a sensational 2016 campaign after returning from a potential career-threatening injury. He racked up just under 100 saves and posted nine shutouts. In over 1,700 minutes of action, he only allowed 21 goals.

This team has all the tools to take home a Colonial Conference-Liberty Division title for the third consecutive season and will have a lot to say once the state playoffs roll around.

HADDONFIELD Bulldawgs

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Jack Dugan has been a major contributor for Haddonfield since his freshman year and it will be exciting to see how he winds down his career this fall before heading to Division I James Madison University. He had 22 goals and 16 assists as a junior to make the all-conference first team for the third straight year and the all- South Jersey first team. He has 48 career goals and can break the program’s all-time record of 64 with another big season. Senior Sam DeCencio is another Division I recruit who has committed to La Salle. He had seven goals and a team-leading 19 assists to make the all-South Jersey second team and all-conference first team. Other offensive contributors include senior Max Green (six goals, four assists); juniors Steve DiTomaso (13, seven) and Gabe DaSilva (six, eight), an all-conference second-teamer; and sophomore Tommy Mollis (seven, three). Senior Finn Miller is a standout goalie who had nine shutouts last year. Other returners expected to contribute are senior Will Sabia and juniors Luke Baxter and Mike Gallo.

OUTLOOK: The Bulldawgs’ 2016 season featured a share of the Colonial Conference Liberty Division title—their second straight—along with their first trip to the South Jersey Group II final since 2011 and a 16-5-2 final record. With Dugan and DeCencio leading the way, expect more of the same this fall.

Boys Soccer Top 10 for September 11th (SJSD)

Updated on 06/10/2022

1. Delran, 3-0, The Bears ended last season as the No. 1 team and there’s no reason to take them down now. Fast start has seen them outscore opponents 6-0.

2. Cherry West, 3-0, The Lions had a disappointing finish to the season last year after winning the South Jersey Coaches Tournament championship. They seem well equipped for another successful season.

3. Haddonfield, 3-0, The Bulldawgs are a senior-laden team that is off to a roaring start. Have outscored opponents 9-0, including a win over Group 4 Cherry Hill East.

4. Washington Township, 0-0, The Minutemen are a perennial power that finished strong last season and that brings back a lot of talent for another run.

5. St. Augustine, 1-0-1, The Hermits spanked a good Rancocas Valley team in their season opener, but coming back to tie Cape-Atlantic American rival Mainland.

6. Mainland, 0-0-1, The Mustangs return all but four of the players who carried the team to a Group 3 South Jersey championship last season.

 7. Shawnee, 1-0-1, The Renegades are a team that always has to be reckoned with. Opened the season with a nice-win over Olympic American rival Cherokee.

8. Williamstown, 1-0-1, The Braves have opened with a nice win over a tough Sterling team, and then played to a scoreless tie with Tri-County Royal rival Clearview.

9. Haddon Township, 1-0, The Hawks have, for years, been one of the better small-school programs in South Jersey.  They were co-state champions in Group 1 last season.

10. Cherokee, 0-1, Despite an opening loss to Shawnee, the Chiefs figure to be one of the tougher teams in Group 4 this season.

EASTAMPTON – It took 83 minutes for Jack Dugan to finally find some open space against Rancocas Valley on Friday afternoon.

He didn't let it go to waste.

After being hounded by Rancocas Valley's physical defenders all game, Dugan sprung free in the opening minutes of overtime and ripped a left-footed shot inside the far post from the left wing to give Haddonfield, the No. 19 team in the NJ.com Top 20, a hard-fought 2-1 win over Rancocas Valley on the road.

"Credit to Rancocas Valley, they're absolutely a great team and probably the hardest team we've played all season," Dugan said. "They kept the ball well and challenged us. They went ahead early and we never backed down. That's the thing with our team – we always persevere and we never give up.

"In overtime, I told myself I wanted to step up and get this goal. I got my chance and put it away."

Haddonfield found itself pinned back in its defensive third for the better part of the final 10 minutes of regulation, with a young, but talented Rancocas Valley inching closer and closer to netting the game-winning goal.

Ultimately, Haddonfield's defense – which was led by Dugan, who moved to center back late in the half – held strong and kept Rancocas Valley out.

Haddonfield nearly won it in the opening minute of overtime when Dugan played a ball from Tommy Mollis, but narrowly missed.

"That was sort of the plan for the first overtime," Haddonfield coach Ryan Nixon said. "I knew how tired my guys were, so it was important to try at least get Jack forward again and hopefully spring the attack, which we were able to do right before the goal. Tommy played a great cross into Jack that he got on the end of. The defenders for Rancocas Valley did an unbelievable job all day. Jack narrowly missed that chance, so I had a good feeling after that play.

"Jack's a big player. He's the type of guy that, for the last four years, he would always play his best in really big, tight spots like today was. We needed a player to step up for us, and more often than not, that player is Jack. We're real lucky to have him."

After a scoreless first half, Rancocas Valley jumped on the board in the 42nd minute when Dan Arone finished off a chance that was set up by J.C. Johnson to beat Haddonfield keeper Finn Miller. Johnson chased a pass down the left wing, cut to the inside and had his shot blocked.

But the ball landed at the feet of Arone, who was able to slide the shot past Miller, who was outstanding and made seven of his 11 saves in the second half.

Like all good teams do, however, Haddonfield had a response. Six minutes later, Steve DiTomaso was played through on a perfect ball from Mollis and he beat Rancocas Valley Nick Mulkay to his right to equalize for Haddonfield.

"Its not in our repertoire to make excuses," Nixon said. "We play who's in front of us, any time anywhere. I had this game circled on the schedule because they are such a good program. They're one of the best Group 4 programs in South Jersey. We have a good back-and-forth with them, a little bit of a rivalry. Today was no different. I knew it was going to be a one-goal game no matter what and luckily we were able to come out on the right end of it."

The result, although disappointing, was a big step forward for a young Rancocas Valley team. The Red Devils had plenty of chances, especially late in the second half, to notch the game-winning goal, but just lacked the finishing touch it needed.

"That game should have been over way before we got into overtime," Rancocas Valley coach Damon Petras said. "We played great. It was our best game of the year. It's a disappointing result, but we know now that we can play with the top five teams in South Jersey because in my opinion, they're a top five team."

Mulkay made seven saves for Rancocas Valley.

Haddonfield was dealt a tough blow in the 48th minute when Max Green, a senior captain, went down with a lower leg injury. Green made a goal-saving tackle inside the 18-yard box to get the ball out of danger, but was unable to return to the game.

Gateway looks for positives in loss to Haddonfield

Steve Pasquarello has become content with searching out and finding the little things.

The Gateway boys soccer coach kind of has to do so, because his team has just two seniors and has been banged up since practice began in August.

So that is what Pasquarello and the Gators did on Friday afternoon when they hosted powerhouse Haddonfield, a team with three Division 1 players that is undefeated and will probably play deep into November.

What Pasquarello saw was a team that did not give up, despite the obstacles and the final score, 7-0, thanks in part to Haddonfield coach Ryan Nixon pulling his starters early in the second half.

Haddonfield improved to 7-0-1, while Gateway fell to 1-4-1 overall.

“Haddonfield was obviously the better team, but with two seniors it’s hard and we have been a little hurt,” Gateway senior captain Amar Al-Habshi said. “We were on our home field and we didn’t want to disappoint anyone. Even though the score wasn’t what we wanted, we didn’t quit and that’s a win right there.

“We’ve had our issues, like not having the whole team together throughout preseason, with the injuries. But that we didn’t quit, we kept playing hard, that is a positive. It was 7-0 and we still took something away from it. We had our movements down and we still pushed the ball.”

Haddonfield’s Jack Dugan had a hat trick, the second of his career, and the Bulldogs scored within the first four minutes of the game. He also recorded the 100th point of his career.

“Dugan is very good. I played with him for many years and we knew coming into this it would be a hard game,” said Dominic DeGeorge, Gateway's other senior captain. “Even though it wasn’t the score we wanted, we still moved the ball the way we wanted to and we put some pressure on them. We didn’t stop until the end. The message to the younger guys is to keep their heads up.”

To his credit, Pasquarello remained patient throughout the game, still instructing fundamentals and keeping his focus on the smaller triumphs.

“You have to in a game like that,” Pasquarello said. “We’re low numbers with our subs and inexperienced players. Our goal is to continue working the ball and working together and not give up on anything. Listen, we could have packed it and said we were done. I wasn’t about to let anyone take themselves off the field.

“The guys will play through it and continue working together and play through things as a team. It won’t be easy. We’re in a tough stretch and Haddonfield is a great team and Dugan is tremendous. It wasn’t just him, it was their backs all the way through. As frustrating as things might be, I still heard positives out there.”

DeCencio Helps Lead Haddonfield Soccer Team Poised for Title Run (Philly.com)

Updated on 06/10/2022

Updated: SEPTEMBER 23, 2017 — 5:40 PM EDT
by Chris Melchiorre

When he’s on the high school field, the game slows down for Sam DeCencio.

He has been a varsity starter for the Haddonfield boys’ soccer team since his freshman year.

In the offseason, he has played high-level club and academy soccer — and he was even part of a team that won the U.S. Club Soccer National Cup in Colorado last summer.

Now, as a senior, DeCencio can analyze the field during a game as if he’s studying film.

He’s fast and strong with the ball at his feet, but he also reads the game as well as any player in South Jersey. And, as a center midfielder, that holds true in each third of the field.

“I think this year is the most prepared I’ve ever been for a season,” he said. “I just know exactly what to expect, I know exactly what I need to do, and I’m making quicker decisions.”

And that’s why, in many respects, this is the season Haddonfield has been waiting for.

The Bulldawgs returned nearly every key piece of a team that reached the South Jersey finals last year for the first time since 2011.

A core of players slowly brought Haddonfield back into the conversation about South Jersey’s elite teams over the last three seasons.

This year, that core is as talented and seasoned as any in South Jersey.

“The expectations are very high for this group,” said coach Ryan Nixon, whose team has opened the year 3-0 and is outscoring opponents 8-0. “We’re a more senior-heavy team this year, and a lot of these guys have been leaders well before this season. And Sam is one of those guys. I think this group is ready for success. And I think they’re ready to leave their mark.”

Along with DeCencio are fellow star players Gabe DaSilva, a midfielder, and Jack Dugan, a forward. Both were also on last year’s club national championship team, an experience DeCencio described as unforgettable.

DeCencio said he and Dugan — a James Madison recruit who generated 22 goals and 16 assists last year — have been best friends since they were six years old.

“I’m pretty sure we met before we even started playing soccer,” said DeCencio, a La Salle recruit who recorded seven goals and 19 assists last year. “But, really, soccer is what’s bonded us. We’ve always played on the same team. And that’s been huge for our chemistry on the field.”

DeCencio said he has always been drawn to soccer and plays it virtually year-round.

And when he’s not playing it, he’s thinking about it.

“Sam is one of those difference makers you don’t see come through your program very often,” Nixon said. “His leadership and contributions in every facet of the game are huge for us.”

A growing rivalry with another elite area program — Delran — has been occupying DeCencio’s thoughts recently,

Delran bounced Haddonfield from the South Jersey Group 2 playoffs in 1-0 games in each of the last two seasons, including last year’s championship game.

“And actually the rivalry goes back to when we were playing club soccer for Haddonfield when we were kids, and they were always really good,” DeCencio said. “We all know each other on both teams. And every single time we play, it’s a battle.”

He said last year’s loss was heartbreaking, and he’s working this season to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“We have to get better throughout this season,” DeCencio said. “We have to peak in the postseason. And I think we can do it.”

DiTomaso Scores Pair to Give Haddonfield Win (SJSD)

Updated on 06/10/2022

WEST DEPTFORD – Haddonfield High School boys soccer coach Ryan Nixon has come to expect a lot of offensive production from Steve DiTomaso.

The junior forward first made his reputation when he scored 13 goals last season, but the tallies haven’t been coming as frequently this so far this season.

The coach has been patient, waiting for DiTomaso to find his offensive rhythm, and now the wait may be over.

DiTomaso struck for two goals on Monday night, both came on skilled shots, and he led the Bulldawgs to an important 3-0 victory over West Deptford in a Colonial Conference Liberty Division game.

Nixon was pleased to see DiTomasso have a break-out game.

“I wouldn’t say he’s been in a slump,” he said. “He hasn’t had the offensive output we saw last year. But now he’s really starting to hit his stride.”

The win kept No. 2 Haddonfield undefeated at 10-0-1, while No. 7 West Deptford lost for the first time this season and fell to 9-1.

DiTomasso scored the second and third goals of the game, and Nixon was not surprised to see him come through in a big game.

“Steve is real hard-working,” he said. “His desire to score goals and his desire to win is a difference-maker for us.”

DiTomaso's goals came after Jack Dugan got Haddonfield off to a good start. His successful penalty kick 19 minutes into the game gave the Bulldawgs the only goal they would need.

Playing for the first time in a couple of weeks after recovering from an injury, Haddonfield goalie Finn Miller posted 8 saves for the shutout.

Afterward, DiTomaso said the Bulldawgs approached the game as it was a showdown type of contest.

“This was huge game for us,” he said. “The Haddonfield-West Deptford rivalry is a big one. So this game meant a lot to me.”

As was the case with Nixon, some of DiTomaso’s teammates were waiting for him to get his offensive game going.

Dugan said he was sure it would only be a matter of time before it happened.

“This has always been Steve – he shows up in big moments,” Dugan said “We’ve seen it in the preseason and we saw it last year. He’s always been humongous in big games.

“Today that was evident. To step up with two goals in a game like this, that was tremendous for our confidence, He’s a huge player for us.”

According to Nixon, the Haddonfield attack was the difference.

“When you have players like Jack Dugan and Steve DiTomaso . . . we’re really been firing on all cylinders,” he said. “I thought tonight was evidence of that.”

“We have six or seven guys who, on any given day and night, could be dangerous.”

The teams played evenly though the opening portion of the game until a hand-ball foul in the box led to Dugan’s penalty kick opportunity.

West Deptford goalie Jackson Clark has been one of the main reasons the Eagles were able to get off to an unbeaten start, but he was no match for Dugan’s shot.

“(Getting the lead) was big,” Dugan said. “The atmosphere was pretty loud, and it was a pretty even game until that point. When I got my opportunity I stayed composed in that moment and I put it away.”

The 1-0 lead held until late in the first half when DiTomasso managed to get the ball away from a defender and score an unassisted goal.

West Deptford coach Steve Jakubowski felt that goal, coming so late in the half, took something out of his team.

“That kind of dropped our sails a little bit,” he said. “We need to overcome that. It was the first time all season that we were down, and we needed to come out a lot stronger.”

Any hope West Deptford had of getting back into the game waned in the closing minutes when DiTomasso picked up a loose ball near midfield.

He dribbled the ball about 50 yards on a break-away and beat Jackson one-on-one for the clincher.

DITOMASO NETS TWO, DUGAN CASHES IN ON PK FOR WINNERS

WEST DEPTFORD - Jack Dugan used the word humongous three times in a matter of 30 seconds.

The Haddonfield senior referenced it twice when talking about teammate Steve DiTomaso and again when describing the effect his goal had on Monday night’s outcome.

When arguably your biggest rival is undefeated, and you walk out of their house with a convincing 3-0 victory, the word pretty much fits the bill.

Haddonfield raised its unbeaten record to 10-0-1 as Dugan scored on a first-half penalty kick and DiTomaso added single tallies in each half. Not that the Haddons needed something to boost their confidence, but this Colonial Conference Liberty Division victory proved to be something special … Even if for only one night.

“Whenever you can shut out a team like West Deptford on a night like tonight and score three goals, especially when they’re undefeated coming into the night, it’s definitely a confidence booster,” Haddonfield coach Ryan Nixon said. “We try to treat every opponent the same. We just try to play our game and execute, and we did that tonight.

“Our attack was the difference. When you have players like Jack Dugan and Steve DiTomaso … We’ve really been firing on all cylinders as far as going forward.”

Dugan collected his 14th goal of the season on a penalty kick with just over 21 minutes left in the first half. A hand ball in the box gave him the opportunity to score what proved to be the game-winner.

“It was a pretty even game until that point,” he said. “There were still some nerves. I got my opportunity, a humongous opportunity. Like I always do, I stayed composed in that moment and it was huge for us.”

A junior, DiTomaso then gave the visitors some breathing room, blasting a shot to the far post for a 2-0 advantage just before halftime. He would capitalize on a semi-breakaway with just over two minutes left in the contest for the final margin.

“I tried shooting from the top of the box, but I couldn’t get that shot off,” he said of the first goal. “I didn’t quit, so I went to the ball and fought through the defense.

“(On the second) I was running wide open and slowed down to get my shot off. I heard a defender’s footsteps, so I knew it was time to shoot and I slid one in.”

Said Dugan: “He shows up in big moments. We’ve seen it in preseason, saw it last year. He’s always been humongous in big games. … He stepped up, two goals in a game like this. It’s humongous for our confidence.”

“He’s starting to hit his stride. He’s a difference maker, a real hard worker. Obviously his desire to score goals and win is a difference maker for us,” Nixon noted.

West Deptford coach Steve Jakubowski felt his Eagles did a nice job of trying to get back into things after the break, but to come back from a two-goal deficit was extremely tough.

“… To give up a goal right before halftime took the wind out of our sails,” Jakubowski said. “I was happy with the way we came out in the second half, the first five or 10 minutes … But we fell apart in the first half and you have to play a full 80 minutes.”

Finn Miller made nine saves to earn the shutout.

“He picked a couple out of the air, especially on some balls that were hit in the area,” Nixon said. “He made the saves he needed to. He wasn’t tested a lot, but the times when he was called upon he made some nice saves.”

Jackson Clark turned away 12 shots for West Deptford.

Haddonfield is on a roll, scoring goals and playing terrific defense. The Haddons have allowed just three goals all season and came into the week at No. 2 in the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association poll.

“We really needed to be composed. We knew the atmosphere was going to be what it was – a night game, sort of a rah-rah kind of thing,” Nixon added. “For us, the message was that it was another game and two points that we need.

“Our self-belief is definitely a strength. The attitude and vibe is second to none.”

“Obviously the West Deptford-Haddonfield rivalry is huge and we always look forward to it,” DiTomaso said. “We looked at this as another game that we had to play our best and win, so we put our hearts out there.

“It’s a brotherhood. We play for each other and just have so much heart. Hopefully we continue to do that.”

Haddonfield Hits Milestone #700 (Courier-Post)

Updated on 06/10/2022

The Haddonfield High School boys’ soccer program has been around since 1973.

In those 44 years, the Haddons have compiled seven state championships and 17 sectional championships. They’ve captured Colonial Conference championships on 26 occasions and are in the middle of their 10th consecutive 10-win season.

Last Wednesday, Haddonfield, ranked No. 2 in the Courier-Post Mean 15, put another notch in its belt. A 1-0 victory over Lindenwold marked the 700th win in the program’s storied history as it now sits at 701-184-67 overall.

“Seven hundred is just a byproduct of, over the course of four-plus decades, trying to teach the kids the right things … It’s a great thing,” head coach Ryan Nixon said. “I think it’s especially special because this group is going to be the group that hit the number. It’s been a fantastic team to coach in all aspects. They’re great kids and so hard-working.”

Nixon has been there for eight years, five as the head coach. He’s led the team to 71 victories as of Haddonfield’s 12th win of the season on Friday.

But it’s the coach he played under when he attended Haddonfield who he said deserves most of the recognition for the milestone, the late Joe Falana.

Falana was coach for 38 years and racked up 625 victories, as well all of the aforementioned state titles. He was the definition of Haddonfield soccer and quite possibly the only reason the program is still thriving today.

“Success and consistency is built over the long haul. I think Joe established that foundation over the better part of four decades,” Nixon said. “I’m really just trying to put my own stamp on it now.”

And of course, it’s the players too, and the current crop has some of the best the Haddons have ever seen.

“The consistency of success has come down to having fantastic players, coachable players, kids that were truly interested in the betterment of the team above and beyond that of the individual player,” Nixon said.

Players like Jack Dugan, who recently tied the program’s all-time scoring record with 64 goals and is third in the state with 15 assists. Players like Sam DeCencio, who is fifth in New Jersey with 14 assists a year after he came within five of the single season program record of 24.

“This program has kind of built excellence for a long time now, so going into high school you know if you want to go play soccer and try out for the high school team, you know what the expectations are,” Dugan said. “What usually sets us apart from everyone else is we just try and win every day. We try and build for the future, not just the upcoming season.”

At 12-0-1 in 2017, the Haddons are once again one of the strongest programs in South Jersey. It’s equal parts talent, tradition and passion for the sport that have Haddonfield on the road to its next 700.

Jack Dugan Breaks 39-Year-Old Scoring Record (NJ.com)

Jack Dugan breaks 39-year-old record as Haddonfield's all-time leading scorer
Jack Dugan became Haddonfield's all-time leading scorer on Monday.

Jack Dugan remembers being the ball boy for Haddonfield when his dad was the team's assistant coach.

When his oldest brother Connor, who graduated college two years ago, and his middle brother Wyatt, a 2016 Haddonfield graduate, started playing, he remained on the sideline studying the game and dreaming of the day he'd have a chance to leave his mark on the Camden County school's program.

Those dreams correlated into reality on Monday when Dugan scored three minutes into a 6-0 win over Collingswood for his 65th career goal making him Haddonfield's all-time leading scorer.

Ironically enough, his first career goal came against Collingswood when he was a freshman.

"To be able to score the record goal against Collingswood, the same way I scored my first goal, was great to come full circle and really reflect on my career," Dugan said. "There's no way I could've done this without my teammates. My coach said yesterday, '65 goals also comes with 65 assists'. I've been pretty lucky to have the talent around me that I have, the coaches that surround me everyday, my family and my friends."

The record was previously held by Rich Sexton who graduated in 1977 with 64 career goals.

From ball boy to all-time leading scorer, the past four years have turned Dugan into the figure that aspiring soccer players in Haddonfield emulate.

"It's kind of hard to describe because everything happened so fast," the two-year captain said. "As a leader, I want not only my teammates, but the younger players in the community to look up to me and say 'I want to beat that record.' It would be great if someone else can do it because I'm sure (Haddonfield) will have great success."

When Dugan joined Wyatt on Haddonfield's varsity squad there was a sense of expectation that followed him onto the field. He came in with a good reputation as a hard-working player who had a nose for the net. It didn't take long for those expectations to come to fruition as he led Haddonfield with 10 goals as a freshman. The next season he upped the ante to 16 goals, which was second most on the team, and he regained the scoring crown with 22 goals as a junior. He currently leads Haddonfield with 17 goals to go along with his 15 assists.

"He's grown every year as a player since in every area of his game," Haddonfield coach Ryan Nixon said. "His ability to finish with both feet is uncanny, his defensive positioning and reading of the game are both top notch, and his speed with the ball allows him to beat multiple defenders. Jack has always performed his best in the biggest games. The biggest moments."

Dugan has already come through with some clutch moments this fall. He scored the overtime game-winners against Rancocas Valley and Haddon Township, as well as put home the game-winning penalty kick in a win over West Deptford.

While he has already put his timely goal scoring ability on display, Dugan has high hopes for Haddonfield as the South Jersey Coaches Association Tournament gets underway Saturday and the South Jersey, Group 2 tournament is just around the corner.

"We just try to win every day and try to get better every day," Dugan said. "Obviously, every team wants to win a state championship and that's our goal."

John Strohlein's Hat Trick Leads No. 5 Delran past Haddonfield

Updated on 06/10/2022

DELRAN – John Strohlein has had plenty of memorable moments on Delran's historic grass field during his high school soccer career.

His final game at The Den is one he will never forget – and maybe one of the best on that list.

Strohlein, the Bears' captain, struck for two goals in the first half and completed the hat trick late in the second half to lead top-seeded Delran, ranked No. 5 in the NJ.com Top 20, to a 4-1 win over second-seeded Haddonfield in the South Jersey, Group 2 sectional final on Friday afternoon.

The win added to the Delran legacy in South Jersey, Group 2 – it was the Bears third straight sectional title and fourth in the last five years. Delran will now get, at long last, No. 10 Holmdel, the Central Jersey champion, in the Group 2 semifinals at 7:30 p.m. at Hopewell Valley High School on Tuesday.

"Johnny steps up for all these big games," Delran coach Mike Otto said. "I think it's a credit to him and the top players step up in big games and Johnny did it once again. He had a great and a great game."

In a game that both programs had been anticipating since last year's one-goal sectional final, Delran wasted no time seizing the momentum as Strohlein headed home a long service on a set piece in the third minute to stake the Bears to an early lead.

Cole Gifford played the ball in from midfield and Frankie Taylor flicked it toward the middle of the 18-yard box where Strohelin rose about the Haddonfield defenders and fired the ball past keeper Finn Miller.

Strohlein doubled down on that lead in the 24th minute when he headed home a corner service from Mark Olivo to put Delran up, 2-0.

"To score three goals in a big game like this is huge and to see how happy my guys are when we do it, it means the world to me," Strohlein said. "Haddonfield is a really good team with a lot of good players, so to come out with a 4-1 scoreline is really impressive and it means a lot to us."

Haddonfield, led by Jack Dugan, the program's all-time scoring leader, had a number of chances on close set pieces in the first half, and applied pressure on Delran throughout the game, but couldn't find the finishing touch when it mattered. Max Green scored Haddonfield's lone goal in the 70th minute to cut it to a 3-1 game, but it didn't impact the outcome.

"Just like last year, this is going to be difficult for me for awhile," Haddonfield coach Ryan Nixon said. "This is the best group of kids I could have ever asked for. They're winners and play with so much heart. I could read you off a list of kids that I thought played their heart out today. This is the game. We'll be back next year and try to make another run. Guys like Jack Dugan and Sam DeCencio and Max Green and Finn Miller, you don't get players like that very often in the program and this year was our third highest ever win total."

Olivo man-marked Dugan throughout the game and never allowed him to find open space that enables him to operate flawlessly.

Delran took a 3-0 lead in the 64th when Sean McLaughlin hit a streaking Jayson Vandermark cutting through the box. Strohlein capped off his memorable performance by flushing in a free kick from 20 yards out in the 75th minute.

Delran, which didn't play as clean of a game as it had hoped for, in part because of temperatures dipping in the low-30's and winds swirling, will get a crack at a Holmdel team that has gained plenty of hype throughout the season.

Delran will be just the second ranked opponent that Holmdel has played this year. The Hornets fell to No. 9 Pingry, 1-0, on Oct. 7. Delran, on the other hand, has wins over Allentown Central Catholic (Pa.) and Pennington and a tie against top-ranked Delbarton.

"Sometimes, I question my own process and think I'm insane with the teams that we play," Otto said. "In the end, it's nice that it pays off. We challenge these guys every day and every game, that's our philosophy. When we face a good team like Haddonfield in the sectional final, it's nothing we haven't seen before. All those tough games along the way sure helped us."

"I'm looking forward to it and I think I'm up to the challenge," Delran center back Scott Woodington said. "They're dangerous, but our defense is solid."

Miller finished with six saves for Haddonfield, while Berkant Haliloglu had five stops for Delran.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jack Dugan is a name that will be synonymous for soccer success at Haddonfield for quite some time.

The senior forward is leaving the school as its all-time leading scorer with 72 career goals. He broke a 39-year record previously held by 1977 graduate Rich Sexton, who left the program with 64 career goals.

After Dugan broke the record, Sexton paid him a visit to give him some congratulations.

"He congratulated me and said this was well deserved," Dugan said. "He told me that his first two years he played at goalie and then he was moved up top. For him to go out of his way to come congratulate me just shows how much of a great person he is and how classy and honorable the Haddonfield soccer club is with everyone that runs through the program."

Dugan may not have spent two years playing between the pipes, but much like Sexton he was willing to play anywhere on the field for Haddonfield. When he was done tearing defenses apart up top, Haddonfield coach Ryan Nixon often moved Dugan to the back, where he spent about 1/3 of his minutes.

Scoring may have been Dugan's forte, but he is a dangerous playmaker as well. He finished the 2017 season with 20 helpers, to go along with his 24 goals, and has 54 in his career.

"Jack is one of the few players that I've been around, as a player and as a coach, that I would call great," Nixon said. "He's been a joy to watch. He's really grown as a player in the four years that I've been coaching him. He's grown as a person too. He's such a humble kid and has worked extremely hard."

While Dugan has a long list of accolades on his resume - Haddonfield's all-time leading scorer, four-time All-Conference selection, third team All-State to name a few - it is going to be the simple things that Dugan will remember about playing at Haddonfield.

"I think that 20 years from now, 30 years from now, I'm going to look back at all the great things we did senior year," Dugan said. "This season I'll always remember scoring the historic goal that set the all-time record. Looking back on this season, I"m just going to remember going out there everyday with my friends, giving it everything we had and making great memories together."

COACH OF THE YEAR: Over 10 years ago, Sterling boys soccer was a middle of the pack soccer program. Since then head coach Pete Marlys has turned this program into a serious contender year-in and year-out.

This season was no different.

Sterling went 14-6-2, with a 11-2-2 conference record, and outscored opponents 68-18.

It picked up two keys wins over Haddon Heights, tied Haddonfield and battled Haddonfield and Shawnee tough in one-goal games. Its loss to Shawnee came in the SJSCA first round. In the South Jersey, Group 2 tournament, it fell to eventual sectional champion Delran, 3-1.

Bryan Andrade led Sterling with 22 goals and 19 assists, while Justin Hofacker (13 g., 5 a.) and Simon Reng Thlang (11 g., 9 a.) both reached double-digits in goals as well. Between the pipes, Paul Ganiel had 108 saves and 11 shutouts.

TEAM OF THE YEAR: Haddonfield continued to be a force in the Colonial Conference this season. It finished the year 21-3-1, going 12-1-1 against conference opponents in the process. Haddonfield advanced to SJSCA Tournament semifinals, where it fell to Rancocas Valley, and advanced to the South Jersey, Group 2 final, where it lost to Delran.

While Jack Dugan was the catalyst for Haddonfield's offense, this team had some serious offensive threats beyond just the senior standout. He had a great compliment in fellow senior Sam DeCencio, who was fantastic this season with 10 goals and a team-high 25 assists.

"Sam for me was every bit as valuable as Jack on the team we had this year," Haddonfield coach Ryan Nixon said. "He's probably one of the best left-footed players that I've ever seen at this level."

Steve DiTomaso also helped round out the offense with 15 goals and five assists, while Luke Baxter (9 g.), Will Bond (5 g., 5 a.), Tommy Mollis (4 g., 6 a.), Geno Mariano (5 g., 1 a.) and Will Sabia (4 g., 5 a.) were all key contributors as well.

While the offense averaged 3.56 goals per game, Haddonfield's backline was as tough to beat as anybody in the state. Haddonfield allowed 13 goals in 25 games and had 18 shutouts. Will Bond, Max GreenMike SchroeterMike GalloCole Roddyand Luke Baxter made up Haddonfield's defense in front of senior goalkeeper Finn Miller.

"Finn was tremendous," Nixon said. "He really picked up his game during the second half of our season. The shutouts were really a product of the six guys that we had in rotation in playing our back four. Finn performed at a very high level obviously, but our defense in general has been a staple of Haddonfield soccer over the years."

OTHER SUCCESSFUL TEAMS

Haddon Heights (9-8-4) had a nice state tournament run in it. It took down Gateway and Haddon Township to advance to the South Jersey, Group 1 semifinal, where it fell to eventual sectional champion Glassboro, 2-0. John Taylor led Haddon Heights with 11 goals and five assists, while Chris Snyder had six goals and five assists. Connor Rink made 121 saves and eight shutouts.

Haddon Township (13-7) went a perfect 10-0 against Colonial Conference Patriot Division teams. It advanced to the South Jersey, Group 1 quarterfinals, but fell to Haddon Heights. Collin Madden led Haddon Township with 13 goals, while Owen Vermette had seven goals and four assists.

West Deptford (16-4-2) went 10-2-2 against Colonial Conference opponents. It made the SJSCA Tournament, but fell to Rancocas Valley 1-0 in the first round. In states it knocked off Cedar Creek and Barnegat before falling to eventual champ Haddonfield in the South Jersey, Group 2 semifinals. Kyle Whitehouse led West Deptford with 15 goals and seven assists, while Maguire Lyons had eight goals and as many assists. Jackson Clark made 91 saves and had nine shutouts.

Haddonfield's Jack Dugan Earns Boys Soccer Player of the Year Honors (Courier-Post)

Updated on 06/10/2022

When Jack Dugan was in seventh grade, he made a choice to stick to soccer.

Though he also played hockey at the time, Dugan decided it was time to focus his attention on one sport. It was simple math.

More: Boys' soccer: All-South Jersey teams

More: Boys' soccer: Delran crowned South Jersey's No. 1 team again

More: Boys' soccer: Glassboro's Mark Bridges earns Coach of the Year

He picked up soccer at 5 years old and spent his free time in the backyard and basement playing with his two older brothers, Connor and Wyatt. His father, Jim, was a longtime assistant coach for the Haddonfield High School boys’ team.

“Deep down inside, it’s the sport I really loved and it was one of the greatest decisions I’ve made,” Dugan said.

A few years ago while his dad worked the sidelines and Connor took the field, Jack pitched in as a ball boy. It was then the passion grew into motivation.

“At the end of the day, seeing them win games and seeing them be successful, I told myself that’s something I wanted to be,” Dugan said. “I didn’t want to just be someone that nobody remembered. I wanted to be remembered forever from this program.”

Dugan recently finished up his senior year with the Haddons, which also happened to be his best. He posted career highs in both goals (24) and assists (20) all while leading Haddonfield to a South Jersey Group 2 title game appearance. His assist total was third-best in the region.

To top things off, he cemented his legacy as a Haddonfield legend just like he wanted. Dugan set the program’s all-time scoring record, which stood for 39 years, with 72 career goals.

For his efforts, Dugan is the 2017 Courier Post Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year.

“Jack just always went out and his goal was to play at his best,” coach Ryan Nixon said. “And when Jack was at his best, he was unstoppable.”

While his stats reflect the type of player he is, it’s his teammates’ numbers that tell the whole story. As maybe the toughest player to mark in the state, opposing defenses constantly put pressure on Dugan.

But all this did was free up space for other Haddons like Steve DiTomaso (15 goals) and Sam DeCencio (10 goals). All Dugan had to do was tap into his incredible soccer IQ to split the defense.

“That’s the type of dangerous player Jack is. He was rarely not being marked, if not being double-teamed,” Nixon said. “To have a player like Jack who’s that dangerous and that consistent, it obviously makes the rest of your team that much better because he’s able to put them in good positions.

“He’s always been more concerned with how his team is performing, how he can lead his team better and taking his team to places they’ve never been before as opposed to, ‘Well, I want to score 30 goals this year.’”

Dugan is a dangerous striker from anywhere in the attacking third who almost always makes something happen. Nixon said he’s seen it develop over the last few years, but the work Dugan put in before his senior season made the difference.

There were relentless sessions of weight lifting, running and other workouts that Nixon saw first hand. Dugan also played with a top New Jersey club program.

“I knew it was going to be my senior year and I knew every game I played was going to be one closer to my last game ever,” Dugan said. “In the offseason, playing soccer for Match Fit (Academy) helped me stay in shape and stay in the mode of everything.”

All of it combined for the perfect recipe to create an outstanding season and a stepping stone to Dugan’s future. He’ll play Division I soccer for James Madison University next fall.

But for now, the 17-year-old forward leaves Haddonfield as one of the best to lace up a pair of cleats for the Haddons. It’s something it felt like he was destined to do.

“I really don’t know if I’m ever going to have another player like Jack, and it’s not just the player he is, it’s the person that he is,” Nixon said. “He’s such a great kid and I’m really going to miss him.”
