HADDONFIELD BULLDAWGS

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Haddonfield graduated an outstanding senior class, including all-time leading scorer Jack Dugan and fellow Division I player Sam DeCencio, so new leaders will have to emerge. One of the key returners is senior forward Steve DiTomaso, a proven finisher who had 15 goals and five assists last year. DiTomaso also had 13 goals as a sophomore and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to being the No. 1 scoring option. Junior Tommy Mollis is another top returner who had five goals and four assists playing mostly at outside midfielder. He will most likely be moving into DeCencio’s spot at center mid, where his skill and creativity should lead to a big season. Senior midfielder Luke Baxter (nine goals) and junior forward Geno Mariano (five goals) are other important pieces of the offense. Senior Riley Powers also has experience in the midfield and the defense is led by senior Mike Gallo and junior Cole Roddy. There are four or five candidates to take over as the starting goalie and an open competition for the job will be held during camp.

OUTLOOK: The Bulldawgs went 21-3-1 with their third straight Colonial Conference Liberty Division title last year. They also made the sectional final and the semifinals of the South Jersey Coaches Tournament. Despite the losses to graduation, the program expects to compete at a high level again.

Analyzing the Colonial Conference

Despite losing a strong senior class, Haddonfield will enter the season as the odds-on favorite to capture another Colonial Conference regular season title, with hopes of challenging rival Delran for a South Jersey, Group 2 title. Haddon Township, coming off a 13-win season in 2017, should be the favorite in the Patriot Division.

What will the post-Dugan era look like for Haddonfield?

Jack Dugan put together a historic career and finished as Haddonfield’s all-time points leader while guiding the Bulldogs to an appearance in the South Jersey, Group 2 final last November. So, where does Haddonfield go from here? The expectations are high for an experienced Haddonfield team that has some holes to fill in its lineup. Still, Ryan Nixon has turned Haddonfield into one of South Jersey’s best programs and will have his team ready to compete at that high level, even after graduating a player like Dugan.

Haddonfield Uses Fast Start to Upend West Deptford (SJSD)

The Bulldawgs scored in the opening three minutes to take the lead and then outlasted the Eagles in frenetic night game.

WEST DEPTFORD – There were few if any secrets on Monday night on the back fields of the West Deptford Industrial Park’s soccer complex.

Not that many boys’ soccer games in the Colonial Conference follow an unfamiliar script, but even with a loss to conference rival Sterling by Haddonfield left a sour taste in the Bulldawgs mouths and did not go unnoticed by the host Eagles.

“We needed a fast start,” said Haddonfield head coach Ryan Nixon, whose team lost by four goals to Sterling on Friday. “We needed to come out strong and play better from the outset.”

“We knew that (Haddonfield) lost on Friday,” West Deptford head coach Steve Jakubowski said. “We also knew with their offense we were going to give up a goal. We didn’t in our first two games so we wanted to see how we would react. Initially we did well but in the end, we can do much better.”

Haddonfield (4-1 overall, 3-1 division) opened the scoring in the first three minutes on a goal by Max Norton and after it survived a push by West Deptford (2-1, 1-1) over the next 25 minutes secured a 2-0 win in a Liberty Division game.

“I think that 25 or so minutes after (Haddonfield) scored early, we played really well,” Jakubowski said. “But in the second half, give Haddonfield a lot of credit, they outworked us and wanted it more. We definitely can take some positives out of this and build on it and we will be seeing them again later this year (in a night game at Talen Energy Stadium).”

The game opened at a frenetic pace as Haddonfield went on the attack. In fact three consecutive failed chances had Nixon fighting back frustration on the sideline. A restart from 42 yards proved to be the difference as the ball sailed into the box where Norton put home for the lead.

Instead of seizing the momentum, the Bulldawgs got back on their heels.

“I’m not sure how that happened,” senior sweeper Mike Gallo said. “Maybe we relaxed, maybe it was a bit of relief but we’ve been playing a long time and that can’t happen. Give (West Deptford) credit they didn’t back down and they came at us. I think we lost our shape a bit and that’s on me as the sweeper. But we got the win.”

With 12 minutes left in the half, West Deptford’s aggressiveness caught up to it as a counter attack left junior midfielder Tommy Mollis found an opening in the middle of the field. So open that his shot from 24 yards caught everyone off guard as it hit the left panel with 12:27 left in the first half.

“I’ll admit I was so open I was a little worried I would miss,” Mollis said with a smile. “But you can’t over think it and I’m happy we got that 2-0 lead.”

The goal deflated West Deptford which played a lackluster second half and failed to challenge for a goal that may have made the game more interesting.

“We didn’t play well,” Jakubowski said. “I think we let our emotions get to us but we can learn from this game.”

“This is a game where we learned a lot about ourselves,” Nixon said. “We’re still getting to know each other. These kids have played together growing up but it’s still different at this level and you have to learn how to play together. Tonight we did that and, especially in the second half, we played better as a team.”

Jason Snyder understands that being a high school soccer coach is more than just Xs and Os.

“Our faith and family has to be first, school has to be second and soccer has to be third,” he said.

It’s a mantra he has lived and worked by in his almost decade and a half on the Lindenwold sideline. It’s one that was echoed by junior Christian Bonilla when asked about Snyder’s coaching style.

“Since he’s been at Lindenwold, he’s cared about us. We’ve accepted him as our family,” Bonilla added. “He’s always there for us in school and out of school.”

It’s a tough gig sometimes, but it’s one that Snyder cherishes. He’s brought together a diverse roster of players, sometimes from as many as six different countries, and acted as a father figure.

A couple weeks ago, Snyder was honored for his efforts by United Soccer Coaches with the High School Coach of Significance Award for the state of New Jersey. The award, given annually, acknowledges high school coaches for developing their athletes on and off the field.

“A soccer game is like life, especially in a competitive game. … The flow of the game could be your highs and lows,” Snyder said. “How you act on the field in your lows is really how you act as a man during the lows of your life.”

Ryan Nixon of Haddonfield nominated Snyder for the award, which showcased just how much respect he has in the region.

And for good reason.

“He sacrifices just so much for us,” Bonilla said. “He tells us we just need to be like a family. That’s his big motto: Be a family.”

Take for instance a recent contest against Haddonfield. Snyder knew it would be tough and a chance for the Lions to score a big upset.

But with two of his top players, Henry Gomez and Ezequiel Estrada, dealing with nagging injuries, Snyder made the decision to limit their playing time.

“I said, ‘Listen, this game means a lot to me, but it doesn’t mean your health. Your health is more important,’” Snyder said.

Though his players were frustrated, Snyder knew it would pay off in the long run, both physically a mentally. He realizes that at a young age, his players rely on him for guidance and support.

It may not be the kind they always want but it’s the kind they will always need.

Delran Holds Off Haddonfield Again (NJ.com)

2018 BOYS SOCCER ESSENTIALS

As the rain continued to punish the turf at the Westampton Sports Complex Monday afternoon, the idea that Delran's season might come to an end far earlier than expectations dictate began to materialize into something real.

Haddonfield, Delran's biggest state tournament rival in recent years, held a pair of one-goal leads over Delran in the South Jersey, Group 2 semifinals through a driving rain storm and appeared, at long last, to be in a position to knock off the most respected boys soccer program in South Jersey.

A 120-second span changed all of that.

Down by a goal, Sean McLaughlin fired in an equalizer from 20 yards out in the 65th minute and Frankie Taylor knocked in the game-winning goal two minutes later to pave the way for second-seeded Delran, the No. 7 team in the NJ.com Top 20, to a 4-2 win over No. 3-seed Haddonfield.

"All the boys stepped up," McLaughlin said. "This is a really big test and that's a very good Haddonfield side, nothing but respect for them. Our character came through. It's been a long season and we know how coach Otto gets on us. We're up early in the morning and this is a testament to him. That's really good character. We pulled together. We stuck to our game plan. There was no panic and we never just started hitting long balls over the top or anything. We stuck to our game plan."

The final score might indicate that Delran, with four goals in the second half, wore down Haddonfield and secured its spot in the sectional final again with relative ease – but that's far from the case.

On a slick surface, Delran had a tough time converting with finishing quality after a dominant opening 40 minutes, despite heavily out-chancing Haddonfield.

That changed in the second half, as Delran dug deep, got dirty and scored a couple grind-it-out goals to put the game away.

Trailing by a goal to open the second half, Taylor drew Delran level in the 48th when he took a pass along the right wing into space, made a nice move to sidestep the keeper and slipped a shot with composure into the back of the net.

That play, it appeared, would be the one to break Delran's drought and get the offense going.

But Haddonfield had no intentions of going away quietly.

Haddonfield re-took the lead in the 53rd minute when Steve DiTomaso collected a pass and struck a 25-yard laser below the crossbar to make it a 2-1 game.

That goal set the tone for Delran's dramatic finish, started by Taylor's two goals and capped off by Jayson Vandermark knocking in a loose ball that rattled around the six-yard box in the 76th minute to put the finishing touches on the two-goal win.

"It took dedication," Taylor said. "We do hell week at the beginning of the year and after we went down, we told ourselves, 'Let's go back to hell week. Let's think about those times when we had to struggle and work hard.' We found a way to come back."

Delran will host No. 4-seed Manasquan, which beat top-seeded Bordentown in OT Monday, in the sectional final on Thursday with a chance to defend that crown and set up a likely rematch with No. 3 Holmdel in the Group 2 semifinals next week.

Playing in a sectional final is a big deal for a program that was left in limbo after collecting two straight red cards in one game in September and played the toughest schedule of any team in N.J.

"It's been a rough season and it's something that we haven't had as much over the last couple of years," McLaughlin said. "We always have a tough schedule, but we lost some guys from last year. Some of the guys that have really stepped up, I'm so proud of them and there's a lot of work to be done and a lot of training to be in. We're celebrate this for today and get back out there tomorrow."

Haddonfield, a team that had serious holes to fill from graduation, continued to develop into one of South Jersey's best boys soccer programs this year and kept this game closer than last year's sectional final against Delran.

Haddonfield took the lead in the final minute of the first half when R.J. Mroz chipped a shot past Delran keeper Berkant Haliloglu that trickled into the net. Delran had dominated the play in the first half, but that goal gave Haddonfield momentum leading into the break.

#41 - Haddonfield (15-7)

Haddonfield's run in the state tournament ended at the hands of Delran again this year, this time in the South Jersey, Group 2 semifinals. It took down Collingswood and Oakcrest to reach another showdown with Delran, where it led late in the second half before falling, 4-2. After some key graduations, Haddonfield looked to Steve DiTomaso and Tommy Mollis to pick up the slack and the duo did not disappoint. DiTomaso had 13 goals and 10 assists, while Mollis had 11 goals and 12 assists. Tommy Casper was the team's rock in goal.
