The Brian Brick Award of Courage
The Brian Brick Award of Courage is the HMHS Boys Soccer Program's oldest and most historic award annually bestowed to an individual Varsity player. Mr. Brick (HMHS '86) represented Haddonfield Memorial High School in Boys Soccer during the 1980's and was a State Champion along with the rest of the Varsity soccer team during the 1984 season. Following his Freshman season of Men's Soccer at Albright College in 1986, he began to experience shortness of breath, fatigue, and other health issues as a result of Cardio Myopathy (which is essentially a virus that causes the heart to become enlarged). In need of a heart transplant, it was well-documented that Brick relied on the toughness, grit, and lessons learned as a result of his time as a player in the Haddonfield Soccer Program at HMHS as instrumental in giving him the courage to not only undergo such a high stakes procedure, but to also rehabilitate and eventually return to the soccer field thereafter. His example is one of the clearest and best in HMHS Boys Soccer history for our current and future generations to follow. We honor this great example annually by awarding the Brian Brick Award of Courage to a student-athlete who has represented HMHS Boys Soccer at the highest level with great courage, skill, integrity, & fighting spirit.
