Haddonfield Bulldawgs

Players to watch: Christian “Chich” Ball has been a dynamic player throughout his career at Haddonfield and earned all-conference first-team accolades for the second straight season last year after leading the Bulldawgs with five goals to go with three assists despite battling various injuries. It will be exciting to see what the forward can do as a senior. Senior forward Michael Mariano added four goals, all of them game-winners, along with two assists. Junior Matt Murschell provides more skill on the wing and is particularly effective on free kicks. Senior Auden Yowler is an all-action midfielder and ball-winner with the ability to create scoring chances, and senior center midfielder Jack O’Donnell started to earn important minutes in the second half of his junior season and will look to play a bigger role. Senior back Billy Impagliazzo, an all-conference second-teamer, is a poised veteran who leads the defense in front of senior goalie Joey Lamb, who finished with 53 saves in a strong junior season. Seniors Daniel Guzman, Cyrus Marwaha and Samir Marwaha round out the experienced defensive rotation. Sophomore Darragh Roddy, the lone freshman to play a full-time varsity role, rarely left the field as a rookie. He will be counted on to either firm up the defensive side of the ball or add another attacking threat in the midfield. Promising varsity newcomers are senior Hudson Schwab and sophomores Andrew Guveiyian, Jack Walters and Andrew O’Donnell, along with sophomore keepers Brady Norton and Alexander Goldman.

Outlook: The Bulldawgs went 7-6 with four one-goal losses against a challenging schedule last fall and were not able to compete in the playoffs due to COVID exposure. It would not be surprising to see this motivated group pull out more of those close games this year and be contenders in the Colonial Conference Liberty Division and South Jersey Group II.

RIVALRY WEEK: One of South Jersey’s best rivalries resumes when Haddonfield hosts West Deptford under the lights at 7 p.m. on Monday. When they last met, West Deptford prevailed 1-0 in overtime last Nov. 5, ending a 13-game winless streak against the Bulldawgs. That game started a six-game winning streak to end the season, culminating in a sectional title for the Eagles.

West Deptford opened with a 2-0 victory over Audubon last week while Haddonfield dropped a 2-1 OT thriller to Haddon Township.

Zuzulock helps West Deptford Earn First Win at Haddonfield Since 2013 (NJ.com)

For the previous seven years, every trip the West Deptford boys soccer team took up I-295 to Haddonfield ended with a somber bus ride home.

The Eagles finally made the trek worthwhile on Monday night.

Junior midfielder Gavin Zuzulock scored to break a 1-1 tie late in the first half and West Deptford held on for a 2-1 victory over its biggest rival in Colonial Conference-Liberty Division action. It was the program’s first win at Haddonfield since a 1-0 game all the way back on Oct. 17, 2013.

“This was a really special moment and I’m glad I was able to spend it with my team,” Zuzulock said. “It was a long time coming. We’ve been working so hard for so long. We’ve been trying to get this since my freshman year and even before that. I’m glad we could come together as a team and show that all the hard work, coming in at 5 a.m. on Saturdays and working on and off the field, has paid off.”

Senior captains Nate Schultes and Shane Byrne also played a huge part in the win, as Schultes scored the opening goal for West Deptford and Byrne led a strong defensive effort to help the Eagles improve to 2-0. Christian Ball scored on a penalty kick for the Bulldawgs, who fell to 0-2.

The last time these two teams met, West Deptford ended a 13-game winless streak in the series with a 1-0 overtime victory. That started a six-game winning streak to end the season, capped off by a sectional championship.

As they showed on Monday, the Eagles continue to play with the same confidence as they did at the end of 2020.

“We brought back a large part of our starting lineup and we just thought, let’s put it on them,” Schultes said. “They always put it on us here and then we battle at our place, but they own us here. So we thought, let’s put it on them early and pressure them. We have a bunch of kids who work hard. We put the work in every morning at our lifts and we’re constantly talking about getting better, so we knew this was the year we could it put on them.”

West Deptford was the aggressor from the start and played with energy all night long under the lights in Haddonfield’s football stadium.

“We attacked them early, which is very rare,” Byrne said. “Usually they’re attacking us early. We put the foot on the gas first and came out with the win. This is the first time since 2013 that we’ve won here and it’s very special. I’ve seen many senior captains lose here. We lost to them at the Union’s stadium during me and Nate’s freshman year, and we lost here in the playoffs our sophomore year. A win was well-needed here.”

Schultes got things started in the ninth minute after a Haddonfield goal kick went awry and bounced back toward the net. He hustled past a Bulldawg defender, got to the loose ball first and scored into the far corner for a 1-0 lead.

“That’s what most of my goals are,” he said. “Not really technical or (flashy), just hard work and being physical. That’s what this conference is. You can’t be technical, you’re just going to be fouled and they don’t really call many fouls here. You have to grind it out and be physical. That’s what the weight room is for.”

West Deptford got whistled for taking down a Haddonfield player in the box on a restart later in the half, and Ball converted the PK to even the score. But just about two minutes after the equalizer, Schultes hit the post and the ball bounced out to a wide-open Zuzulock, who unleashed a hard shot to put the Eagles right back on top.

“Once they had that PK it really just ignited something,” Zuzulock said. “The call before that was a little questionable and had everyone upset but we knew the next five minutes were ours and the next goal was ours. We had confidence in ourselves.”

Byrne and the West Deptford defense took over from there, limiting Haddonfield to very few scoring chances in the flow of the game. The Bulldawgs’ best opportunities came on long throw-ins from Auden Yowler and a few restarts, the last of which led to a wide-open look in front of the goal in the final seconds. But the shot went over the net and the Eagles escaped with a win.

“We’ve been unlucky on a few chances like that through the first two games,” Haddonfield coach Ryan Nixon said. “We’re hoping some of those bounces will start to go our way. But you make your own luck in this game.

“You’re going to hamstring yourself if you rely on just trying to produce off a long throw or any sort of restart. We worked endlessly during the run of play trying to create chances and opportunities and then trying to take advantage of those chances. It’s taking some time to find the right combinations in front of goal. We’re a work in progress just like everyone else at this point and I’m confident we’re going to figure it out. … But credit to West Deptford, they came out the aggressive team tonight, which was a little disappointing. We need to do a much better job from the beginning of the game.”

Haddonfield has lost two one-goal games to sectional championship teams from last year, as its opener was a 2-1 overtime defeat against Haddon Township.

“We’re just looking for a spark, especially on the offensive side of the ball,” Nixon said. “We really feel like we have one of the best forwards in the Colonial in Christian Ball and he scored a goal tonight. I thought overall he did a nice job. With the schedule we’ve built and the overall level of the Liberty Division at this point, every game is going to be a test and very, very tough. Tonight was evidence of that.”

While Byrne called Haddonfield’s long throws “scary” and thought the Eagles could have done a better job defending them, West Deptford first-year coach Tim McAndrews was pleased with the effort.

“Haddonfield is so dangerous with those,” he said. “They always seem to have a kid who can throw it 35-40 yards. He did a great job of creating those chances, but Shane in the air is so tough. It’s amazing how many times he wins those.”

West Deptford has now reeled off eight straight victories since its win over Haddonfield last year. The Eagles’ streak will be put to the test with difficult home games Wednesday against Haddon Heights on Friday against Haddon Township.

“Last year we had that overtime goal and we haven’t lost since then,” Schultes said. “That was huge and we’ve just carried it through. We hated to lose the seniors from last year but we brought back a solid core and we said, let’s run it back and do it again. There’s nothing more that I can ask from this team other than to keep working hard. Hopefully that momentum will keep carrying through because we have Haddon Heights and Haddon Township this week too.”

“That’s the thing about this division; it’s not like it used to be,” McAndrew added. “Everybody is a threat. These guys do a really job of enjoying the moment and then it’s on to the next. … It’s the Haddons this week. It’s crazy and nerve-wracking but we’re just taking one at a time.”

The South Jersey boys soccer Mean 15 for Oct. 20 (Courier-Post)

Updated on 06/10/2022

Cherry Hill Courier-Post

Bugra Kumas (11) of Washington Township gets airborne to bring down a bouncing ball in the midfield during Monday's Olympic Conference American Division meeting with Cherokee.

There's that temptation, every once in a while, to just rip the whole thing up and start over. It comes around the middle of the season, when the teams in the Mean 15 combine to lose 13 games in a week. This isn't a big deal, when they're playing each other – but Middle Township? Williamstown?

Some teams that have been outside, looking in, are just starting to hit their stride, late in the season, and making their own strong cases for inclusion.

The best example of this is Haddonfield, of course.

The Bulldogs started the season with three straight losses – to Haddon Township, West Deptford and Sterling – and people pretty much moved on after that, even though all three of those teams are outstanding.

So what happens?

Well, it's been written here a time or two that the easiest way into the Mean 15 is to beat a couple of teams in the Mean 15, and Haddonfield did exactly that, with wins over third-ranked West Deptford, 13th-ranked Schalick and sixth-ranked Sterling, all in the space of six days. Haddonfield was the first team to score on the Silver Knights since opening day.

(This was a perfect week for a meteoric rise, of course, since No. 1 lost to No. 7 and No. 2 dropped a pair of games. Sometimes you really do just fill out the obvious slots and then say 'who's next?')

For the moment, the most obvious slot – well, it's also been said here that the best way to climb is to beat the teams above you. Cinnaminson took care of business last week and there's just no way around putting the Pirates in the No. 1 spot now.

Middle Township, which beat Ocean City, was also under consideration. The Panthers will face Shawnee in the first round of the South Jersey Coaches Tournament, which is a huge opportunity for them.

It's great to have that Tournament. It will be a crucible for sorting all this stuff out.

Here is a look at the teams in the South Jersey Mean 15:

1. Cinnaminson (14-0-1. No. 3 last week) – beat Pemberton, 6-0 and 7-1, to clinch the BCSL Patriot Division title.

NEXT: at Delsea Wednesday; hosts Rancocas Valley Saturday in the first round of the Coaches Tournament.

2. Delran (12-2-1, No. 4 last week) – beat Burlington Township, 4-0, Moorestown, 3-2 and Monroe, 2-1. Drew Roskos had four goals in those three games and has 18 for the season.

NEXT: hosts Clearview Wednesday and Northern Burlington Friday; at Lenape Monday.

3. Washington Township (11-2-1, No. 7 last week) – beat Shawnee, 3-2 – the Renegades' first division loss in 742 days; beat Eastern, 1-0 on Bugra Kumas' OT winner.

NEXT: hosts Egg Harbor Wednesday; hosts Paul VI Friday in a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament.

4. Shawnee (11-1-1, No. 1 last week) – lost to Washington Township, 3-2; beat Cherry Hill West, 2-1, and Cherokee, 2-1. Matt McFadden of Shawnee scored two goals against Cherokee, including the overtime winner, to raise his season total to 10.

NEXT: hosts Camden Catholic Wednesday; hosts Middle Township Friday in the first round of the Coaches Tournament.

5. Egg Harbor Township (11-3, No. 8 last week) – won at St. Augustine, 2-1, and at Hammonton, 3-2, to win the Cape-Atlantic League Tournament.

NEXT: at Washington Township Wednesday; at Mainland Friday, at Clearview Saturday in a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament; at Ocean City Monday.

6. St. Augustine (12-2-1, No. 5 last week) – beat Mainland, 2-0; lost to Egg Harbor, 2-1, in a Cape-Atlantic League semifinal.

NEXT: hosts Schalick Wednesday in a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament.

7. Haddonfield (8-5-1, not ranked last week) – beat West Deptford, 2-1, Schalick, 2-1 and Sterling, 2-1. Christian Ball and Andrew Guveiyian had two goals each. It was Guveiyan who ended Sterling's shutout streak.

NEXT: at Haddon Heights Thursday, at Rancocas Valley Saturday; at Audubon 10/25.

8. West Deptford (12-2-2, No. 2 last week) – lost to Haddonfield, 2-1; beat Haddon Heights, 1-0 and Woodbury, 7-0; lost to Haddon Township, 4-2.

NEXT: at Sterling Thursday; hosts Moorestown Saturday in the first round of the Coaches Tournament.; hosts Timber Creek 10/25.

9. Sterling (13-1-1, No. 6 last week) – beat Audubon, 4-1, to extend its shutout streak to 13, a club record. Lost to Haddonfield, 2-1.

NEXT: hosts West Deptford Thursday; hosts Hammonton Saturday in a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament.

10. Moorestown (10-5, No. 9 last week) – beat Northern Burlington, 4-0; lost to Delran, 3-2, and Notre Dame, 4-1.

NEXT: at Lenape Thursday; at West Deptford Saturday in a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament; hosts Kingsway Tuesday.

11. Clearview (12-2-2, No. 10 last week) – lost to Williamstown, 1-0; beat Eastern, 2-1 and Highland, 6-0. Seven different players scored those eight Clearview goals. Nigel Muringani had two.

NEXT: at Delran Wednesday; hosts Egg Harbor Saturday in a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament.

12. Kingsway (10-1-1, No. 11 last week) – beat Timber Creek, 2-0 and Deptford, 8-0. Sean Daly scored his second hat trick of the season in the latter game and has nine goals for the year.

NEXT: hosts Salesianum Wednesday; hosts Cherokee Friday in a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament; at Moorestown Tuesday.

13. Schalick (12-1-2, No. 13 last week) – lost to Haddonfield, 2-1; drew Pitman, 0-0.

NEXT: at St. Augustine Wednesday for a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament; hosts Overbrook Friday; hosts Clayton 10/25.

14. Paul VI (10-5-1, No. 14 last week) – beat Seneca, 4-0; lost to Pennington, 4-1; beat Camden Catholic, 4-0. Jonathan Leary was in net for both shutouts.

NEXT: at Washington Township Friday for a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament; at Life Center 10/25.

15. Cherokee (8-4, No. 15 last week) – beat Cherry Hill East, 9-0 and Lenape, 3-2; lost to Shawnee, 2-1.

NEXT: hosts Seneca Wednesday; at Kingsway Friday for a first-round match in the Coaches Tournament; at Mainland 10/26.

FELL OUT: Ocean City
